In this episode…
With the rapid adoption of e-commerce retail, many once-popular stores like Toys R Us, Radio Shack, and Circuit City ceased operations after failing to pivot efficiently and meet evolving demands. Warehouses overflowed with discontinued and returned merchandise as these shops’ profit margins plummeted. As you break into the online retail space, how can you manage inventory and reverse logistics?
Between frequent product returns and expenses, even the top-performing Amazon businesses only attain a 20% profit margin. Without proper visibility into data, inventory often consumes a hefty percentage of businesses’ profits. Amazon veterans Rolando Rosas and Dave Kelly advise developing elaborate systems to identify return reasons and manage SKUs. 3PL facilities manage your inventory through qualified staff, automation, and precise technology, allowing you to scale effectively. Additionally, you can reduce your annual return rate by answering consumers’ questions and solving their problems promptly.
Join Rolando Rosas and Dave Kelly in today’s episode of What The Teck? as they discuss how to streamline your supply chain and logistics operations. Together, they address their experience transitioning from drop shipping to 3PL, merging online and in-store retail, and the role of social media in the supply chain.

all of them. When I look at and the research that we did, they all had issues that had also nothing to do with the online aspect of it. It’s a very non glamorous back end story of good old fashioned inventory mismanagement. You take some
Dave Kelly 0:24
Amazon sellers that are embracing new technology who’s using AI more than anyone out there we are, you know, we’re using it on every aspect of our business customer service. Rolando Rosas 1:29
mean, there’s a lot of tech and tech related and so much happening right now. It’s both exciting and frightening at the same time, in the this this particular time we’re living in really, you know, much is going on that, you know, it seems like you know, a little bit of data overload with everything happening and so fast the pace right now,
Dave Kelly 1:54
it’s way too fast, you know, makes you think of simpler times. You know, think back to when you were a child we didn’t have we didn’t have all this information overload. We had retail stores, we had different types of community.
Rolando Rosas 2:08
No cell phones to you know, give it to be going off and notifying us every every couple of seconds or minutes. Like right now I’m talking to you and something’s going off on my computer screen right now. distracting me from from the conversation I’m having with you. It’s just something we did not have you when you went to college Dave, I’m just reminded about something what my first day in college in the dorms. We came in early, you know, playing football, you know, we come in way before most of the students to do our tour days and trainings and all that type of stuff preseason. And I remember the floor residential advisor, you know, somebody that’s on the floor there that helps you out. They said, You know, you’re you’re privileged because this is the first year we put phones in everybody’s dorm room. I was like, Yeah, that’s awesome, right. And somebody could before it was the community phone, right. And everybody before it was a community phone, everybody on the floor in the dorm shared that phone. So if somebody got a hold of you or tried to get in touch with you, they had to call that phone and could have found me on the end of the hallway. Hey, it’s it’s your mom, Rolando come down to the, you know, the community phone that hung on the wall. She’s over here on the phone for you. She wants to talk to you then
Dave Kelly 3:29
meanwhile, she already spoke with three, three folks that live in the house. Like Jason is such a nice boy.
Rolando Rosas 3:37
And now, instant communications from anywhere in the world. Right?
Dave Kelly 3:43
You know, what’s crazy, there was this there was a salesperson behind, you know, those phones, those phones that got deployed into every room, you know, that was a probably a pretty big project
Rolando Rosas 3:53
for somebody was ours. In ours, it was batavi I don’t even know if Adavi still around, they may have gotten purchased. But a lot of those phone manufacturers have gone away, which is kind of what gets into what we’re talking about, you know, doing the thing of selling physical products is not an easy thing. Whether you are an online retailer, or you sell offline right you know, and you have a storefront in the real in the non cyber world right and people walk into your store and look at the goods and touch them and you know that’s that’s got me thinking about how did some of these brands that you and I grew up with? You know, like Circuit City you can walk into the store I bought many things at Circuit City RadioShack bought a lot of accessories over time. And
Dave Kelly 4:46
toy stores. You know, one of my favorite I just remember as a kid it was the toy store in Toys R Us
Rolando Rosas 4:52
Toys R Us Toys R Us man. I still remember that. Or do we have any footage on toys r us that we can We can reminisce a little bit about and I’m sure that for, for the folks that are probably younger and may not even know who Toys R Us is. Let’s share a little bit of that. And so if you’ve got your headphones on, listen to us with headphones you’re gonna be able to hear this much better go ahead roll that Alright. Fine twice rockin the guy million toys toys you can play with one go up. We got the best for so much as you really flipped by to train to video games to go up
Dave Kelly 5:42
Oh no. I want to be boisterous kid like that, man. Man.
Rolando Rosas 5:53
There’s no way. There’s no way Toys R Us. Could you ever imagine that Toys R Us is a store you could not walk into today. When you were a kid.
Dave Kelly 6:07
Right Man, I remember when my parents would talk about going to the mall. And the so they would they wanted to bring you school shopping. You know, you really didn’t know when you were a little kid. You didn’t really want to go school shopping. It was more of a chore. But then my parents at least they’d say, Listen, we’ll start over at Toys R Us. You’re gonna go to Toys R Us. And we’ll stop in there. And when I was a kid going to going to the mall with the hopes of going to Toys R Us that was like the carnival. It’s like the mascot. They showed the mascot briefly who was the mascot?
