Do you feel overburdened when receiving an influx of notifications on multiple devices? Context-switching occurs when allocating your attention between various tasks simultaneously. In today’s remote work environment, research shows that 52% of people multitask during virtual meetings, and 56% feel they need to respond to notifications immediately. This increases stress and frustration and lowers productivity significantly. How can you minimize distractions and interruptions to boost efficiency?
As passionate experts in remote work strategies and software, Rolando Rosas and Dave Kelly recommend constructive in-house strategies to limit burnout, decrease interruptions, and enhance team collaboration. During meetings or after work hours, silence notifications on all your devices to ensure an adequate work-life balance. Another suggestion is integrating data from multiple apps to consolidate, organize, and unify information and software. For instance, Zoom offers the capability to make business phone calls, reducing the number of daily meetings on numerous platforms. You can also manage your time effectively by aligning daily activities with your work goals and delegating unproductive tasks.
Tune in to another episode of What The Teck? as Rolando Rosas and Dave Kelly talk about context-switching and share proven strategies to mitigate associated interruptions. Dave Kelly 0:52
Hey, and I’m Dave, welcome to another episode of What The Teck? Rolando we got. We have an interesting topic to hit on today, don’t we? Yeah, we
Rolando Rosas 1:00
Man. It’s one that yeah, you know, if you whether you work from home, or you’re working in the office, comes up every now and then about how you’re getting worked on the all the different facets of work, whether it’s email, whether it’s chatting with, it’s using tools, whether it’s being online, and how that plays a role in the type of work you get done.
Dave Kelly 1:23
Absolutely. You know, what’s interesting is now in this digital world, you know, what we have email, we have our communication system, we have our collaborative tools will pull it will pull it into webinars and meetings, we have notifications going off on every every one of my of my life or window, I’m getting notified, I have a new calendar invite, I have a new question from a co worker, I have a request from my boss, I have 10 requests from customers. And I’ll tell you, it can seem overwhelming. But then you
Rolando Rosas 1:57
got to you got to stay on top of it like pronto, right. They all want you to respond like yesterday, and get that problem solved. Like yesterday.
Dave Kelly 2:05
This is true. And that’s why you know what we’re living in a distraction this world. That’s a perfect world that unfortunately, none of us really live in, we do have distractions, we do have multiple applications. And we do have a high workload, you know, on all of us,
Rolando Rosas 2:23
right? And you know, one of the things as we’re getting ready for this podcast is we wanted to take a look at what does our modern work look like, from a, from a research perspective on our brain loads, you know, are we really effective when we are multitasking? Can we really do all the things that we need to do when we have 10 or more apps, or all the dozens of browsers open or tabs open on a computer? And it turns out they’ve that there’s actual research that looked into this. And there’s a term called context-switching? Hmm. And it’s not the same as multitasking. So it’s not a fancy new term for multitasking,
Dave Kelly 3:07
context-switching. So tell me what exactly does. What is the definition as you see it as context-switching?
Rolando Rosas 3:15
Right, the simplest way to think about context-switching is the attention that you give to the tasks that you’re doing. When you’re bouncing from one thing to another, I get an email notification and ding, my phone goes off, I get a email notification on my computer. And now I’m looking at the pop up that’s on my screen. I’ve got somebody else that then sends me something on teams, and they need my attention. So your attention going from task to task is that context-switching. So I’m going from one app to another, I’m going from my PC and responding and sending a text or I’m going on Twitter to send some to send a response to an angry troll, you darn. Right? Or I mean LinkedIn because somebody hit me up on my DMs and now so all of these things require attention. Some are more complex than others. And the more complex the task, now, if we go to multitasking is where you’re trying to tackle complex tasks. Simultaneously. That’s the the quintessential meaning of multitask. I am watching a video online. I am also on a maybe a phone call, Mike calls me on a phone call. And I’m trying to do both of these two things. I’m trying to approach process what’s happening online on this video that I’m in through but I’m on the phone on hold with the customer rep right, or something else. That’s the quintessential multitasking. I can get both of these two things done at once. And the research out there Dave says that multitasking really doesn’t work and we’re gonna get into particulars and I think we’ll also to serve our audience better, we’ll leave links in the description, or the comments so that you can go and check these out yourselves. So that you can use it within your organization or even share it forward to a colleague.
